COVID-19 (Coronavirus Pandemic)

Updated 09/2022

CDC GUIDANCE ON ISOLATION AND QUARANTINE

IDPH GUIDANCE ON ISOLATION AND QUARANTINE

COVID Vaccines for Children:  The FDA approved the Pfizer and Moderna COVID vaccines for EUA for kids 6 months and older on 06/19/2022.  Due to the nature of this vaccine, we are unable to offer it to those who come for their Well Child Checks/Physical Exams (like we do for influenza vaccine for example).  We encourage all our patients to make an appointment with a local pharmacy (3 yrs of age and older) or or your local health department or AdvocateAurora vaccine sites (for ages 6 months an older) to get their vaccine.

TESTING:  We have COVID-19 in-office rapid PCR tests that take approximately 15 minutes to run.  These tests are only valid if performed on patients with symptoms.  They are not recommended for asymptomatic patients wanting tests for travel or other clearance.

We also have test kits for Quest Laboratories.  These are send-out tests and take approximately 2-5 days for results.  Due to our limited supply, these test will only be offered to those patients who have been evaluated in our office and determined necessary for testing by the provider.

WHO NEEDS TESTING:

QUARANTINE (when you might have been exposed to the virus and may or may not have been infected)

IF FULLY VACCINATED:

1.  If you have been in close contact with a known positive coronavirus case, then you should wear a mask around other people for 10 days.  In-home quarantine is not required.  TESTING IS NOT NECESSARY.

IF NOT FULLY VACCINATED:

1.  If you have been in close contact with a known positive coronavirus case, then you should quarantine at home for 5 days.  If you remain asymptomatic, you may leave your house as long as you wear a mask around other people for an additional 5 days.  ANTIGEN TEST IS OPTIONAL ON DAY 5.

2.  If someone in your family has tested positive, then the rest of your household is considered a close contact and should remain on in-home quarantine depending on their vaccination status (see above).  ANTIGEN TEST IS OPTIONAL ON DAY 5.  IF POSITIVE, CONTINUE TO QUARANTINE FOR THE REMAINING 10 DAYS.

3.  If you or a family member has been in contact with someone who has been in contact with a known positive COVID case, this is considered an indirect contact and NO TESTING IS WARRANTED.

ISOLATION (when you are sick or when you have been infected with the virus, even if you don't have symptoms)

REGARDLESS OF VACCINATION STATUS, the CDC recommends 5 days of in-home isolation from the onset of symptoms or positive COVID test.  IF ASYMPTOMATIC after 5 days, you may leave the home if you wear a mask around other people outside the home for an additional 5 days.  ANTIGEN TEST IS OPTIONAL ON DAY 5.  If you remain symptomatic or test positive after 5 days, the previous recommendation of a 10 day in-home isolation period should apply.  TESTING IS NOT WARRANTED after 10 days of illness to return to school or daycare per CDC AND IDPH guidelines - HOWEVER, YOUR SCHOOL DISTRICT OR DAYCARE MAY HAVE THEIR OWN REQUIREMENTS.

Current IDPH testing guidance and testing sites can be found on the IDPH website.

Anyone with or without COVID-19-like illness or symptoms can get a test WITHOUT a doctor's order.  COVID-19 Testing Sites, IDPH

Conclusion

Among children who are hospitalized for COVID-19, most are younger than 60 days or older than 12 years of age. Children may have severe infection requiring intensive care support. The clinical course of immunocompromised patients was not more severe than other children. Elevated WBC and CRP are associated with greater illness severity.

GUIDANCE/RECOMMENDATIONS:  Please understand that we are following guidelines as they are updated through the Centers for Disease Control Prevention (CDC) as well as the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH).  THESE GUIDELINES ARE CONTINUALLY UPDATED.  We encourage you to view these recommendations frequently for guidance as to your family's questions and concerns regarding COVID-19.  This will allow our nursing staff to respond more efficiently to other, more routine and acute medical questions.

PREVENTION:  Take the same steps to protect against coronavirus as you would to prevent the spread of everyday illnesses like the common cold or influenza:

•Wash your hand often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing

•If soap and water are not available, use a 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer

•Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth

•Teach your child to cover a cough/sneeze with an elbow or tissue

•Avoid close contact with people who are sick

•Keep your child home if s/he is sick and properly notify school

We remain in partnership with you to teach and reinforce the above healthy habits to your children.
